Story-Board

A story board is the illustrated representation of the strip before it is created.

This document is used to define the layout of the boxes.

It is very useful, as it helps to validate the narrative before creating the final drawing.

It is therefore a reference tool when producing the comic strip.

Crayonné

It's at this stage that the chosen creator draws, in pencil, the comic strip board.

They respect the sequence of boxes specified in the story board.

Encrage

Inking involves going over the sketch in a more precise, black layer, often with India ink.

If the inking is done on the same medium as the pencil lines, these are then erased.

Nowadays, some cartoonists prefer to scan the pencil sketch and ink it digitally by computer.

In comic strips, lettering is the stage of writing the text in the speech bubbles.

Nowadays, lettering is done mainly by computer, although some creators still prefer manual lettering, primarily for reasons of graphic harmony.

Couleur

The colours are being added more and more by professional colourists, and rarely by the cartoonist themselves.

Using watercolour or by computer, the colourist chooses and applies colour to the different areas within the inked lines, whilst respecting the continuity of colours as the cartoon strip progresses. They also define the light and shading of the drawing..
